    Bridget Steffen, 24, from Stroud has recently returned from Eastern Chad, where she was working as a volunteer with a medical organisation in the refugee camps that have sprung up as a result of the conflict in Darfur. She leaves the Five Valleys again for Rwanda at the end of January to interview survivors of rape from the time of the genocide and to write and translate articles about human rights issues.   • Brewing up a lost tradition

    Today, much to the chagrin of real ale lovers, the brewing industry is dominated by a few large corporations. But not so long ago, small scale beermakers were dotted across the Five Valleys, including Nailsworth. Beer production in the town ran dry in 1908 when the company merged with the bigger Cheltenham Brewery. But now, nearly a century later, two committed beer drinkers are bringing brewing back to the town by launching their own micro-brewery. Sian Davies reports. read more
