INCLUDED are a few events going on in Nailsworth during the coming fortnight.  Brochures are now available for the Nailsworth Festival 18 - 26 May, also from the TIC and many of the retailers in the town.

Ruskin Mill College Arts Award exhibition will be on show until Thursday, April 18, showcasing the portfolio of students work created especially for the award. In addition, Mark Weymans Pepper Hands photography exhibition will be held between Saturday, April 20 until Thursday, May 2.

WEA  (Workers Education Association) Stroud Branch is having a free event on Wednesday, April 17 at the Nailsworth library Mortimer Room from 10am to 4pm for reading direct from first editions owned and signed by the Super Tramp poet WH Davies, including The Autobiography and the poem Leisure – What If This Life If Full Of Care. Tracy Young reminds us that there will be An Evening of Clairvoyance with Kez and Friends on Saturday, April 20, 7.30pm to 9pm at Nailsworth Youth Club, entry is £5 on the door and all proceeds go to Nailsworth Youth Club. Adults only, refreshments and trade stand goods available to purchase on the evening.

Mornings of stories for all ages at Ruskin Mill, enchanting stories, enthralling tales and elaborate lies. Enjoy the wonder, wit, mystery and magic of stories from around the world. Story lovers young and old are warmly invited to a Saturday morning of stories at the Ruskin Mill hearth. Storyteller Fiona Eadie will be weaving yarns and telling tales for your delight on April 20, 10.30am to 12.30pm. Ruskin Mill, Old Bristol Road, Nailsworth GL6 0LA. Children £3 (suggested minimum age is five); adults £4; family £10. Coffee shop open for drinks and delicious homemade cakes.

Nailsworth Society Rambling group will meet again on Thursday, April 25 outside the library at 9am (note the earlier time), for the drive to Woodstock, Oxfordshire. The five mile walk will take in the area surrounding Blenheim Palace, with views of the lake and house, and a chance to see Churchill’s grave at Bladen. Mainly flat with no stiles. Lunch after the walk at The Woodstock Arms. If you are coming please advise Angela on 01453 832911, as on this occasion we need to arrange transport details and lunch choices beforehand. Lunch will need to be ordered by April 20, Angela has menus.

The Neighbourhood Warden, local police and dog warden drop in will be on duty in the Arkell Centre on Thursday, April 25 from 2pm to 3pm.

Come and be entertained by The Amethyst String Ensemble on Friday, April 26 at 8pm at Horsley 3 in 1 (also known as St Martin’s Church). They will play music for string quintet including arrangements of English folksongs, Purcell’s Chaconne and Schubert’s beautiful String Quintet in C major. The players in the Ensemble will be Peter Stacey, Hazel Davis, Cecily Howick, Juliet Tomlinson & Rachel Howgego. This is a wonderful opportunity to hear one of the most sublime works in the chamber music repertoire, played by a professional group, in the beautiful surroundings of the recently refurbished parish church of Horsley.  Doors Open 7.30pm. Tickets cost £5 and will be available at Horsley Community Shop, at Bluebird, Nailsworth and on the door. Refreshments will be available including hot drinks and a small bar.


The farmers' market will be in the Mortimer Gardens on Saturday, April 27 from 10am to 1pm.

The Nailsworth Society AGM is being held in the town hall at 6.45pm on Monday, April 29, followed by Nailsworth at Work and Play presented by Steve Hill from Stroud Museum.

Nailsworth Arts, Crafts and Music Group have arranged a walking tour of Bath on the morning of Tuesday, May 7.  This will take about two hours, including a coffee break. It will be followed by free time to visit attractions that are of interest to you personally as there are a number of places to see, including the Roman Baths, No 1 Royal Crescent, The Fashion Museum and The Victoria Gallery, which will have on exhibitions of work by Henry Moore, Julia Atkinson and Charlotte Sorapure.  Travel will be by car. Stroud & District Citizens Advice Bureau is open for drop in advice on Tuesday afternoons from 1pm to 3.30pm at the Arkell Centre in Nailsworth. Walking for Health ticks all the boxes; physical, mental and social.  These led walks take place in Nailsworth at 2pm each Tuesday departing from the library. Everyone is welcome; you may even like to consider training as a walk leader to help this ever growing group of folk expand their repertoire. Duration is for approx one hour and covers the myriad of footpaths (and a few roads) in and around the town. For info call 01453 832907 or visit www.strollinginstrouddistrict.org.uk to view other walks in the district.  The Monday Pacerpole 1 - 1 1/2 hour walk for posture currently starts at 2pm, this will change to 7pm on Monday, April 29. Other walks can be arranged as and when required. Call the above number for details. Special note: there is now a shorter walk by popular request.  This is on the third Tuesday of each month. It will also start at the library at 2pm and last about 45 minutes. It will suit those wanting to get back into walking in a more gentle way, and also those who have joined us before, but who have felt that the duration of the current walking programme is a little too long and possibly a little too steep.

Nailsworth Recreation Centre in Nympsfield Road has a number of regular events including classes in zumba, Chinese boxing, tae kwon do, shaolin qi shi kung fu; book the gym or hall for badminton, basketball, etc or a family event. The Forest Green Senior Citizens Club continue to hold meetings most Thursdays on the ground floor at The Arkell Centre at Forest Green where we open at 1.45 for a 2.15 pm start and welcome any new or prospective members who are sixty or older. New to the area? The Nailsworth Society has regular weekly meetings on a Monday. The arts, crafts and music group meets on the first Monday in the month, the local history group meets on the second Monday, the gardening group meets on the third Monday and local studies is on the fourth Monday.
