Two out of three adults could be threatening their health through a lack of exercise, with many people claiming to be too busy at work to stay fit, according to a new report.
A study by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy found that many people were ‘ignoring’ basic health advice, with one in five exercising just once a month. Half of those polled reckoned they would lead a healthier life if it helped them lose weight, but the society said this pointed to a ‘significant gulf’ between what people say and do.
Two out of five people admitted they got out of breath walking up stairs, with women appearing to be less fit than men, the report said.
The most common reason for not taking regular exercise was work commitments, but the society said regular exercise could boost performance at work and counter stress and lethargy.
CSP spokeswoman Bridget Hurley said: “Most people know physical activity is good for their health but when it comes to doing it, exercise simply isn’t a priority.
“Regular physical activity is as important as eating five portions of fruit and vegetables a day, and people need to understand that you can’t keep putting it off. Without sufficient physical activity you increase your risk of lifethreatening illnesses."
Most of those surveyed said they would take more regular exercise if they could fit it into their daily routine.
The CSP launched a new campaign aimed at encouraging people to be more physically active.
