WYCLIFFE Choral Society is performing two of the finest and most popular works in the choral repertoire in its concert in Wycliffe College Chapel in Stonehouse this evening (Sunday) at 7.30pm. Bach’s Magnificat in D major only lasts 30 minutes but is scored for a five-part choir, five soloists and a large orchestra including 3 trumpets and timpani and contains some of the composer’s most exhilarating and charming music. Haydn’s Missa in Angustiis (Mass in troubled times) composed in 1798, was performed in Nelson’s honour when he visited Austria in 1800 and has been generally known as the Nelson Mass ever since. Many regard it as Haydn’s greatest single composition, and it is certainly a favourite of the choral society. The programme is completed by Bach’s Orchestral Suite No. 3 which includes the famous Air on the G string.

The concert takes place in the Chapel, Wycliffe College, Stonehouse, at 7.30pm and the soloists are Hannah Swain and Lucy Hughes (sopranos), Anne Braley (contralto), Roland Kitchen (tenor) and Martin Le Poidevin (bass) with Christopher Swain as conductor.
