THE condition of the Stonehouse to Nailsworth cycle track was condemned by Stroud Town Council on Monday.

Stroud mayor John Marjoram said where the track was not tarmaced, it was rough, rocky and unsuitable for children or riders without strong tires.

The council also wanted an updates on proposals to buy land in Dudbridge to link the track to Stroud.

I'm sure there is plenty of money in the kitty now the tax burden has been ratcheted up in the guise of green policies. How about allocating some of this money to encourage us to use the cycle track, rather than a one sided solution of, only drive if you can afford too.
I have begun to cycle to work but due to continual punctures on the Nailsworth section of the cycle track I have been forced to choose the roads. The roads are neither in a great condition for cyclists and I have twice nearly been knocked off my bike in 2 months. I am lucky enough to be able to afford the purchase of an off road bike that should handle the rough terrain of the cycle track or should ut be named 'Off-Road Cycle Track'?
Please, it is about time we invest some public money to improve the cycle routes, as demand is sure to increase as the economic condition reduces our motoring horizons and lack of support for the shrinking public transport means we need this route to keep people moving, more cost effectively, for the sack of the economy of our valleys.
Would be nice to see future visitors to our towns and villages being encouraged to cycle this route for pleasure, surely that fits the image Stroud & Nailworth like to portray.
