CAMBRIDGE United have secured the services of left-back Anthony Tonkin from Blue Square Premier rivals Forest Green Rovers.

Tonkin, 28, rated as the best left-back in the league by Jim Harvey, expressed his wish to leave the New Lawn at the end of last season.

The 28-year-old, formerly of Yeovil, Stockport and Crewe, has signed a two-year deal at the Abbey and will be reunited with former Forest Green striker Mark Beesley, who joined the U's in January.

Tonkin becomes Gary Brabin's first signing as U's boss.

"We've had a lot of competition for his signature and I'm delighted to be able to bring him here," Brabin told the U's official website.

Tonkin made 38 appearances for Forest Green last season following a move from League One side Yeovil.
