A COMMEMORATIVE plaque has been laid at Nailsworth's War Memorial to honour soldier Mark Chandler who was killed in Afghanistan.

The plaque, organised by the Nailsworth Royal British Legion, bears his name and is the first to be added to the Church Street memorial since the Second World War.

Lance Bombardier Mark Chandler, 33, of the Third Regiment Royal Horse Artillery, was killed in action in Nad-e Ali in Helmand in June 2010.

On Sunday, November 4, Mark's family - including his parents Ann and Mike and brother Stephen - were joined by members of his regiment at a service to commemorate the plaque and lay wreaths.

Tim Godden, chairman of Nailsworth RBL, said: "It was important to commemorate Mark's memory and this will be a place where people can pay their respects."

Former Archway School pupil Mark joined the Army in 2004 aged 26 and served in Iraq before being deployed to Afghanistan in March 2010.
Mark, whose nickname was Chandler Bing, was described as a 'remarkably talented soldier'.
