NAILSWORTH Silver Band has had a busy few weeks performing at high profile sports matches and is becoming somewhat of a lucky mascot playing at three home win games.

The band, now in its 93rd year, performed in front of thousands of rubgy fans at the Kingsholm Stadium at the Gloucester vs Leicester Tigers match in October and then at a special Forest Green Rovers Remembrance Day football match at New Lawn on Saturday, November 10.

They were so well received by the crowds that they were invited to perform again at the Gloucester vs Fiji rugby game on Tuesday, November 13.

Paul McLaughlin, who took over as musical director of the band in September, said: "It has been great fun and we seem to be a lucky charm for the home team.

"We have now been asked if we would be interested in playing at more rugby matches in the New Year.

"It is great exposure for us and something a bit different that the band can work towards and look forward to."

Mr McLaughlin joined the band in April as a bass player when he moved to the area from Inverness to become general manager of Stroud Subscription Rooms.

He has a long musical career as a performer and has also led many different ensembles in Dundee, Newcastle upon Tyne and London as musical director.

Mr McLaughlin plans to get the band competing again and has high hopes to take them to victory at brass band competitions across the country.

But first, rehearsals are underway for a Christmas concert at Nailsworth Subscription Rooms on Sunday, December 9 at 3pm.

Tickets are £5 for adults or £1 for under 16s. Proceeds to the Subscription Rooms Restoration Fund.

The band is currently looking for new members, specifically a soprano cornet player, a second horn player, a euphonium player, a b flat bass player and percussionist, although all players are welcome.

Rehearsals are held at Brewery House, Brewery Lane, Nailsworth on Mondays from 7.15pm.
