STROUD Yoga Space recently opened its doors for business and now offers a range of yoga styles at the purpose built centre in Nelson Street.

The form of exercise has proven popular in the Stroud district with around 40 instructors based locally and Rachel Mellish hopes her new venue will create a hub for yoga.

Rachel, who has been teaching yoga across the county for 10 years, said: "My vision was to create a community of yoga teachers in the area and a place where it is easy for people to come along and try different styles with different teachers to find what suits them."

Fourteen instructors offer up to 80 classes a month teaching various forms of yoga including Iyengar, Hatha, Dru, Astanga, Vinysa and Kundalini as well as special classes for children and adults with physical or mental disabilities and pregnancy yoga classes. Pilates classes will start in January.

The centre has a contemporary, spacious feel and all equipment is provided.
There are two studios set over two floors complete with under-floor heating, bamboo flooring, specially designed mood lighting and there are disabled facilities and access.

Rachel took up yoga when she was pregnant with her daughter to assist with a natural birth and she said it supported her emotionally during a challenging time.

She decided to train as a Dru yoga teacher to offer this support to others.
Rachel who lives in Brimscombe with her husband William and children, Ruby, 14, and George, 11, said: "People come to yoga for many different reasons. Many want to strengthen the body and improve flexibility.

"What people often don't realise is that when you create flexibility in the body you also create flexibility in the mind.

"You are never too old to start yoga. It is always possible to help the body be strong and more comfortable. We work with the body, not against it."
