STAFF from Wyclifffe College in Stonehouse skied into work today, Wednesday, to ensure that the school could remain open for its pupils.

As a boarding school, Wycliffe already has several hundred pupils on site and some staff also live at the college, but contigency plans were put in place to make sure pupils did not suffer too much disruption.

Head teacher Margie Burnet Ward said: "It’s not quite business as usual but it’s pretty close.

"Our staff have been tremendous; some stayed overnight last night, many walked several miles or even skied to get here while others set out in the small hours to make sure they could be here to support our community.

"Where teachers cannot get in, work has been set on our on-line learning platforms and boarders are in classes using the extensive IT facilities.

"A level exams have gone ahead and we were able to offer overnight accommodation to day pupils to ensure they could get in where necessary.

"This afternoon we will finish a little early to let boarding pupils enjoy the snow too – there will be snowy hill walks, snow sculpture competitions and for those who’d rather avoid the cold, we have an afternoon of sporting activities in our fabulous sports centre."
