CAMPAIGNERS opposed to plans for 140 houses in the Slad Valley gathered in Stroud High Street on Saturday, January 26, to raise awareness about their fight.
Representatives of Slad Valley Action Group put up a gazebo outside the Millets store and distributed leaflets to passing members of the public to boost the profile of their campaign.
Mary Jarrett, whose husband Eric founded the action group, estimated the campaigners signed-up 400 new supporters during the course of the day.
The group is fighting plans put forward by the Cheshire-based developer Gladman for 140 homes in Baxter's Field off Summer Street in Stroud.
They say the development would spoil views of the surrounding Slad Valley, which was memorably depicted by the author Laurie Lee in Cider With Rosie.
Gladman, which last week submitted its planning application to Stroud District Council, has said the proposals seek to address the shortage of housing in Stroud.
Mrs Jarrett paid tribute to all the group's members who had given up their time to help on Saturday and thanked those passers-by who had expressed an interest in the campaign.
