ONE hundred saplings were planted at the former Cashes Green Hospital site on Sunday morning to create an 'edible hedgerow'.
Volunteers wrote their names on tags attached to the hazel, elder, dogrose, crab apple and blackthorn fruit trees before they were planted at the new 78-home Applewood development.
Grand Designs presenter Kevin McCloud met visitors and discussed the importance of biodiversity to the project, which is being undertaken by Haboakus - a joint venture between Kevin's company Hab and housing group GreenSquare.
"Having had a productive landscape for about 100 years, we are now becoming further and further removed from the source of food production," said Kevin.
"The horse meat scandal has really brought this home to consumers.
"When you have fruit growing in your neighbourhood or garden you know exactly where it has come from and how it has been grown."
