POLICE officers, firefighters and college students are just some of the teams already signed up to pull an eight tonne lorry through Stroud next month.

Event organiser Gary Gardner, 51, has arranged a major fun day between noon and 4.30pm on Bank Holiday Monday, May 27, with the highlight being the Stroud Charity Truck Pull Challenge.

The challenge, hosted by Gary and QVC presenter Laura Alexandra, will see 12 teams of 15 go head to head in a race to pull an eight tonne lorry through the town centre in aid of the Door Youth Project.

"The lorries have been very kindly donated by Dairy Crest and the 11 teams we have so far include police officers, firefighters, rugby teams and college students," said Gary.

Forest Green Supporters club, regulars at the Prince Albert, the British Oak and the Queen Victoria have also signed up for the challenge and now there is only one team needed.

"The teams will pull the lorries along the A46 at Merrywalks as part of a timed race," said Gary, who is organising the event with Door apprentice Harry Gardner,17.

"I was shown around the Door in February and was so impressed with the work that Brendan, Heather and the team were doing that me and Harry decided the challenges we were organising would be in aid of the Door."

Gary is also hoping that a few local celebrities will support the event.

"Although the truck pull challenge is the main highlight of the day I really want the event to be a day out for the family which will involve the whole community of Stroud," he said.
