A RED telephone box which was bought by a community group for £1 could be turned into a village library in Sheepscombe.

The kiosk was purchased by the Sheepscombe Society when it was decommissioned by BT a few years ago.

Now members plan to spend the summer carrying out renovation work and are seeking ideas for its new use.

"It was going to be taken away and we thought it would be a shame as it looks lovely in the centre of the village," said committee member Andrew Smith, 43, who is spearheading the project.

"One idea is to turn it into a village library for when the travelling library visits but we want to involve the whole community to see what they want."

A small team from the society will strip the old box down to the metal and restore it with new glass, new parts and lick of red paint.

"It is going to take most of the summer and it is costing us around £2,000 out of our own pockets but we are very passionate about the project and we want to see it completed," said Mr Smith.

"It is all about finding a use for it and doing it up."

The society is also looking for sponsorship from businesses to help fund the project in exchange for adverts inside the box.
