Putting the Stroud Valleys and Vale on track for economic growth I made two speeches of obvious local relevance in Parliament last week. Firstly, I contributed to the economic growth debate as part of the deliberations on the Queen's Speech. The House of Commons always debates the Government's programme over a period of a few days because there is such a wide range of subjects to cover.

Economic policy is of paramount importance, especially in the Stroud Valleys and Vale, because the Government's objective of rebalancing the economy towards manufacturing and engineering is so relevant to prevailing trends in employment and to our industrial heritage. Ever since I was elected to the House, I have focussed on the economy, as exemplified by successfully securing funding for the redoubling of the Stroud-Swindon railway line (with, of course, the support of neighbouring Parliamentary colleagues).

In the debate, I turned my attention to the supply chains crisscrossing this constituency and, consequently, of enormous value to our local economy. I noted, for example, that Delphi (based in Stonehouse) produces half of all fuel injectors for large trucks in Europe. Supply chains are all about manufacturing and supplying components for finished products thus contributing to the success of many household names.

The second speech I made was all about the need to link schools and businesses together in order to ensure the right skills are available to business and that young people are equipped for the emerging opportunities in the rebalanced economy. I will be developing this theme through my work on the Education Select Committee and, increasingly, organisation like the Royal Academy of Engineering.

My aims for the next Festival of Engineering and Manufacturing (week beginning Monday 11 November) are geared to develop a good understanding between education and industry. Already, the Festival has attracted support from many local firms and schools. A range of activities to engage and encourage young people are planned in conjunction with events to highlight the advantages of having a modern, innovative and inventive economy.
