Beloved family cat Shelby killed by dog in savage attack
A MOTHER and her two children watched in horror as their beloved pet cat was savagely killed by a Staffordshire bull terrier.
Lucy Thornton, of Midland Road, Stonehouse, was cooking dinner for her family around 6pm last Tuesday, September 3, when she heard someone shouting outside.
A Staffordshire bull terrier had got into Lucy's garden through a hole in the fence and was attacking her eight-year-old cat Shelby.
"I ran outside to see Shelby’s head in the mouth of a Staffordshire bull terrier," said Lucy.
"The dog was off the lead and its owner was repeatedly punching it in the face but it would not let go.
"Its teeth had pierced straight through her ears, face and neck and although she was still alive during the 10 minutes of pure hell while we attempted to get the dog off, she sadly died a few minutes later."
Lucy’s son Nathaniel, nine, and daughter Skie, 14, both witnessed the incident.
"My son has ADHD and learning disabilities and so he is finding it very difficult to come to terms with what happened," added Lucy.
The family reported the incident to the police but they have since been told that there is little officers can do.Gloucestershire police confirmed that the cat died after being attacked by a Staffordshire bull terrier.
A spokesman added: "Inquiries were carried out but as the incident happened on private land it is deemed a civil matter. Officers have contacted a dog warden in the area."
Lucy and her children buried Shelby in their garden later that night and are now trying to come to terms with what happened.
"Our cat was like another child in the family. My children grew up with her and I am completely distraught," said Lucy.
