Local care homes step out on Memory Walks to raise money for dementia charity
STAFF and residents of five Bupa care homes in Gloucestershire are taking a big step to help people living with dementia by organising sponsored community Memory Walks to raise money for vital research and care.
The walking events, which are taking place between Monday 23 and Sunday 29 September, form part of the Alzheimer’s Society Memory Walk initiative, which is the charity’s biggest annual fundraising event in partnership with Bupa Care Services.
Barrington Lodge Nursing Home in Cheltenham will hold its Memory Walk event on Saturday 28 September at 12pm.
Going by the name of ‘The Barrington Bed Push’, the local community are being urged to take part in the fundraiser, which will see a bed being pushed around the village to raise funds for the charity.
Care home manager, Michelle Little, commented; “We are all in the process of getting our walking boots (and sticks) at the ready!
“Memory Walk is a worthy cause for our local people to get involved with and I’m sure everyone, no matter what their age, will have a great time at these fun, social events. We hope as many people as possible will join us to take part.”
Details of walking events at other local care homes can be found in the tables Siobhan Drane, Bupa Care Services’ partnerships manager, added, “Research tells us that many older people don’t do enough physical activity and that the loss of strength and stamina related to ageing is partly caused by reduced physical activity. So, not only will these walking events help those living with dementia, but they will also benefit our residents and more mature people of the community from a health perspective.”
This is the third year that Bupa Care Services has partnered with Alzheimer’s Society Memory Walk. Last year, over 160 of its care homes organised walks, making a significant contribution to the £1.4 million raised in total by the initiative – its most successful year to date.
As well as local care home events, the care provider is also encouraging the community to take part in local walks organised by the Alzheimer’s Society.
