COMMUNITY stalwart Margaret Marshall received her British Empire Medal for services to communities in Forest Green and Nailsworth on Saturday, September 21.

Mrs Marshall, former chairman of the Forest Green Residents' Association, worked tirelessly for 10 years to get the Arkell Centre community building built.

She was named in the Queen's Birthday Honours earlier this year and was awarded the medal at the Arkell Centre by the Lord Lieutenant of Gloucestershire, Dame Janet Trotter.

Members of Nailsworth Youth Club served tea and coffee to dozens of Margaret's friends, family and colleagues at the event as well as members of the town council and representatives from Stroud District Council.

She was also supported by members of various groups that she has been involved in over the years including her knitting circle, lunch club and staff from Christ Church, where she is church secretary.

Margaret said: "It was a lovely occasion and I am very grateful to everyone who came along to show their support.

"It was very emotional because I am still shocked that I was nominated.

"It has always been a group effort so I accepted the award on behalf of Forest Green and the whole community."

Recently a special tea party was held in the Arkell Centre to celebrate Margaret's achievements.

Nailsworth mayor Myles Robinson thanked Margaret and paid tribute to her enormous efforts for the town and presented a bouquet of flowers.
