A LITTLE girl has been left heartbroken after her prize pumpkin was stolen and smashed just days before her fourth birthday.
Clara Bermingham, four, who lives in Belle Vue Close with her mum Grace, dad Robert and brother Francis, two, has been left without a pumpkin to carve for Halloween after the one she spent all summer carefully watering and nurturing was stolen from her garden.
“I know that a smashed pumpkin might not seem like a very big concern but to a first time three-year-old gardener it was very distressing,” said Clara’s mum Grace.
According to Grace the pumpkin was stolen overnight on Monday, September 16.
“We woke up on the Tuesday to find it was missing bit it wasn’t until later that day when we found it smashed on the side of the road in Lansdown,” said Grace.
“It was very upsetting for Clara and her brother Francis who had been looking after it very carefully since we planted it in the spring.
“For a child of Clara’s age to have their world smashed in this way is very significant for them.
“I just feel like it was such a mean thing for someone to do and totally pointless.”
After hearing about the theft a family friend offered the Bermingham’s one of their pumpkins for Halloween.
“We are still going to do some carving and make soup but it is just sad that it won’t be with our own pumpkin,” said Grace.
