IT’S about delivery!
How wonderful was it to have such great weather this summer?
I was particularly pleased as, during July and August, we ran several youth retreats and events and it was nice not to be up to my knees in mud (which has been the case most other years!).
When with young people at Soul Survivor and New Wine I was fortunate to find time to listen to a number of well-known Christian speakers.
It struck me, as I sat and reflected on what the different speakers from different parts of the world and various denominations were saying, that I was actually hearing a consistent theme being passionately raised by each and every one of them.
It was a call to action.
During an interview with the current Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, he summed up the myriad of voices by stating that ‘It’s about delivery and people will believe us when we deliver’.
James speaks to us about this very situation when he says ‘What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? … faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead’ (James 2 v14,17)
The local church is superbly able to deliver and does so in so many ways.
However those involved in such initiatives make up only a small fraction of the Christian community.
The thing is that Jesus doesn’t make service an optional extra to our faith.
It is an intrinsic part of it.
Perhaps it should be no surprise, with God speaking through so many about the need us to get involved in our communities, that the HOPE initiative - a catalyst bringing churches together to transform communities - has chosen 2014 for a year of mission; the whole church, reaching the whole nation, for a whole year.
The great thing is that you don’t have to start something new by yourself.
There are lots of opportunities for you to serve in your local communities with groups and organisations that can support you as you serve.
So what are you waiting for?
Go in peace to love and serve the Lord!
