A MAKE-UP artistry student from Stroud and South Gloucestershire College is preparing to take part in the finals of a prestigious national skills competition.
Katie Hadley will put her handiwork to the test against the UK’s most talented apprentices and trainees next month in the final round of the WorldSkills UK National Competition.
The competition is the highlight of the The Skills Show, the UK’s largest skills and careers event, which this year takes place from November 14-16 at the NEC in Birmingham.
Nineteen-year-old Kate qualified for the finals of the competition after winning a regional heat in May with her vivid interpretation of the wicked witch from The Wizard of OZ, which incorporated red poppies, cogs, stripy socks and handmade costume pieces, including ruby slippers.
She now hopes her creative skills will once again let her bewitch the judges and take first prize in her class at the skills event.
Katie, who was put forward for the competition by tutor, Sarah Jordan, will be trialling a new theme - hallucinations - in the final.
Her tutor Mrs Jordan, said: “I’m delighted for Katie. Her work is wonderfully wild, imaginative and original. I’m confident she will impress in the final.”
Katie, who lives in Cheltenham but travels to Stroud to study, said: “I put all my skills into practice for the regional heat and I’m really pushing myself to create a new design that will be better in every way for the final.”
