After five weeks of personal training sessions SNJ reporter Hayley Mortimer reflects on how the blood, sweat and tears of one-to-one training has improved her fitness, strength and lifestyle.
DARK nights make an after work jog even more off-putting and a cosy night on the sofa becomes a lot more enticing than the gym.
But with Christmas around the corner and that little black dress to squeeze in to for parties something had to be done.
And it was with that thought that I signed up for personal training sessions with Sam Ballinger at Stratford Park Leisure Centre.
Over the past five weeks I have been put through my paces with different forms of training in a bid to improve my fitness, strength and to lose a couple of pounds.
This included some tough boxing sessions, weight training, interval training - which involves repetitions of high-intensity exercise with recovery periods in between, and plyometric training - which conditions the body with dynamic resistance exercises that rapidly stretch a muscle and then rapidly shorten it such as hopping and jumping.
While the sessions were difficult and at times I wanted to just give up we also had a laugh.
Sam corrected my technique throughout, making sure my body was getting the most out of every movement.
He also gave me ideas for training on my own and gave me advice and support on how to change my diet
In just five weeks the results have been dramatic.
I have lost two inches from my waist and an incredible seven inches from my thighs.
My metabolic rate has increased by 33 per cent and my muscle content has increased while my body fat has reduced.
My fitness has also improved - my VO2 max figure, which is the volume of oxygen consumed while exercising at maximum capacity, has increased from 'good' at 34.80 to 'superior' at 45.60.
And the hard work showed on Sunday when I completed my first half marathon in 2hours 4minutes.
These results could not have been achieved without the constant help and support from Sam and it has completely changed my lifestyle. I hope I can keep it up.
