SIXTEEN-year-old Millie Jotham has been chosen as the Navy Training Corps national cadet of the year.

The former Maidenhill pupil, who is also a member of Stroud District Youth Council, was chosen following nominations from the 17 NTC units across the country.

Millie, who currently studies maths, politics, economics and design technology at Downfield Sixth Form, was selected from five finalists as the national winner and was presented with the Tony Smith trophy.

The teenager, who has been a part of the Stonehouse unit TS Euryalus for three years, was nominated by her officer in charge Lieutenant Garry Ryall NTC who described her as a first class cadet.

Lt Ryall praised Millie for her hard work both within the unit and the local community.

He said she does not miss a single unit night and helps with the younger cadets.

Millie, who lives in Leonard Stanley and enjoys playing the piano, has been an active voting representative on the Stroud District Youth Council for four years and is also involved with Votes at 16, Eat Well Waste Less and the Stonehouse youth forum.

"It was an honour to have been nominated let alone to have won," said Millie, who was named Young Person of the Year at the Stonehouse Civic awards earlier this year.

She was nominated because of her commitment to ‘making Stonehouse a better place for young people’.
