PLANS have been submitted for new homes behind a pub near Nailsworth.

Five dwellings could be built to the rear of the Rose & Crown in Nympsfield in a bid to generate funding for a ‘desperate’ refurbishment of the pub.

The proposed development comprises of five three-bedroom family homes and includes a new bike shelter and the relocation of the existing beer garden.

In a planning statement submitted to Stroud District Council, Red Rose Developments said: “The Rose & Crown is in desperate need of investment, maintenance and in places essential repair which is absolutely necessary if the village is to retain a good pub.

“The applicant (the landlord) is committed to the Rose & Crown however the Grade II listed building brings with it considerable maintenance costs and it is necessary to look for additional sources of funding to secure the long-term future of this valuable community asset.”

However, one neighbour has lodged an objection to the scheme because he believes it will ‘change the character of the village’.

Nympsfield Parish Council has yet to add its comments before Stroud District Council considers the application.
