AN unsung volunteer has been recognised for his contribution to the community after 50 years of service.

Roger Bassett, who lives in King’s Stanley was named as the Gloucestershire Playing Fields Association Volunteer of the Year for 2013.

Roger has been involved with sport in the village since 1960 when he started playing for the football and cricket teams.

Fifty years on Roger now works tirelessly to ensure that the village playing field which is used for football, cricket and by the local junior school is kept up to scratch.

Roger is also one of the founding members of the King’s Stanley Sports Club, and its secretary since the group’s inception.

He has also been the secretary of King’s Stanley Football Club for 35 years as well as trustee of the Marling Close Trust.

One of his colleagues Robert Penrith called Roger ‘an inspiration’ who shows us what can be achieved through hard work and enthusiasm.

The Gloucestershire Playing Fields Association volunteer of the year is an annual award which recognises individuals help to maintain and improve play and sporting facilities in rural locations such as King’s Stanley.
