A FUTURISTIC mansion in North Nibley was used to stage the dramatic finale of the popular TV series Sherlock this week.

Swinlay House is the home of Renishaw founder Sir David McMurtry who had it built in 2000 and often opens the house for various events throughout the year for charity.

The BBC filmed the episode His Last Vow over four days in August 2013 and features the detective played by Benedict Cumberbatch in a showdown with nemesis Charles Magnusson, played by Lars Mikkelsen.

The episode also saw the Tyndale Monument in North Nibley featuring in the background.

Head of communications at Renishaw, Chris Pockett, said the fee for the location filming would be given to charity by Sir David.

“The house is loaned out to various things to raise money for charity,” he said.

“Obviously it was very exciting for the locals. It is a very positive story for the area. It made people feel good about where they live.”

The 30,000 estate has eight bedrooms over ten floors as well as a viewing tower 14.5m above the lower ground floor level, according to archtitect Roberts Limbrick’s website.

The house also has an eight-bay underground garage, two-lane bowling alley, a squash court, fully enclosed and glazed winter garden and a cinema.

According to developer Swinhay, the house was constructed by incorporating traditional and modern materials to the highest quality by using Cotswold stone, glass and metal cladding.

The building is highly insulated and heated using ground source heat pumps.

The aluminium windows have got integrated electronic blinds and are triple glazed ensuring minimum heat loss.

The estate also includes a floating floor in the swimming pool, meaning the depth can be adjusted.
