A PEACE garden should be created in Stroud to mark the centenary of the First World War, the town’s former mayor has said.
Cllr John Marjoram believes the garden would be a fitting tribute to the almost one million British soldiers who lost their lives in a conflict, which came to be known as the Great War.
The Green Party district councillor’s proposal was made at a meeting of the town council on Monday, January 20.
Speaking at the meeting, the deputy mayor said: “The First World War was the most terrible thing to happen in the 20th century and it would be good to have an area where people can go to reflect on this tragic event and the futility of war.”
Cllr Marjoram’s proposal will now be considered by the town council’s green space committee.
If the committee endorses the idea, it will go for debate to the full council, which would then have the final say on whether or not to approve the peace garden.
