As the wet weather and strong winds continue, Gloucestershire County Council is encouraging people to look out for their elderly or vulnerable neighbours and make sure they’re warm and well.

The weather can make many older people nervous about going out – and flooding can make it difficult or dangerous for some to go out at all. That’s why it’s important to keep an eye on them and check they have everything they need.

The Gloucestershire Village and Community Agents are continuing to help older people across the county, making sure the most vulnerable are safe and well. The agents will be working closely with local partners and organisations in their communities.

However, everyone can do their bit to check on their neighbours, friends or relatives who need a little extra help.

Cllr Andrew Gravells, cabinet member for older people, said: “During this prolonged period of terrible weather, we all need to look out for each other and keep an eye on our elderly neighbours and other vulnerable people.

“This is particularly important when those people don’t have family living nearby, which can make them feel isolated and anxious.

“It can be very lonely for some and just knowing that someone is there to help if necessary can remove a lot of worry and fear. It doesn’t take a second to knock on a door and a friendly smile doesn’t cost anything.”

Helping people in the bad weather: • If someone seems less with-it than usual, it could be that the cold is affecting them – get more advice from NHS Direct if necessary.

• If possible, stay inside during a cold period if you have heart or respiratory problems.

• Keep your home warm.

• Check portable gas heaters are safe, especially if you haven’t used them for a long time.

• Try to keep supplies of fuel within easy reach.

• If you know that people have regular medication, ask them if they have got enough to get them through the current bad weather. If anyone finds it difficult to leave home to collect their medication, they can contact the local pharmacy as most offer a collection and delivery service.
