POLICE in Cheltenham are appealing for information after a woman was assaulted in the town.

The incident happened on St George's Place, near Hanna Court, between 2.30am and 3am on Sunday, February 16.

The 18-year-old victim was approached by a man who asked her for a taxi number. When she told him she didn't have one he started swearing at her, pinned her against a wall and struck her.

The man is described as white, 5ft 7ins tall, in his 40s, of heavy build and with cropped hair. He was wearing an untucked blue, buttoned and collared shirt and blue jeans.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or recognises the description of the man should call 101, quoting incident 77 of February 16.

The woman had walked across Clarence Street, through St Mary's Churchyard and into Chester Walk, near the library, before getting to St George's Place so anyone who witnessed the man in those areas is also urged to come forward.
