THE former Gloucester prison site has been put up for sale.

Originally built in 1782, the former HMP Gloucester lies in the heart of the city adjacent to the historic Gloucester Docks.

The prison which once held 320 prisoners, including serial killer Fred West who was held there on remand, was closed in March last year after 222 years of service as part of a round of cuts.

Paul Baker, director at Jones Lang LaSalle’s Bristol office who is heading the sale, said possible future uses for the site include housing or a mix of uses in the heart of the city.

“This presents a fantastic opportunity for this historic site to be given a new lease of life that will benefit both the local community and the surrounding areas,” said Mr Baker.

The 3.46 acre brownfield site is subject to a number of listings.
