A MOTHER-OF-FIVE was caught four and a half times the drink-drive limit after a collision in the Asda car park in Quedgeley, a court heard.

Saffron Poole, 40, of Brize Avenue, in Quedgeley, had consumed two to three bottles of wine at a friend's house before driving her Peugeot 206, Stroud Magistrates' Court heard on Monday, March 10.

Police were called to a road traffic collision in the supermarket car park around 8pm on January 11, the court heard.

Officers found she had 360 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of her blood - more than four times the drink-drive limit of 80 milligrammes.

"As the door opened the driver fell out of the vehicle. Officers could smell alcohol," said Kathryn Jenkins, prosecuting.

"She was taken to the police station and is described as being unable to stand.

"She was not able to carry out a breath test due to medical reasons so a blood test was taken.

"When interviewed by police she said she had drank two to three bottles of wine between noon and 8pm at a friend's house.

"She had gone to Asda from her friend's house and admitted she was drunk."

Magistrate Dr Hazel Padfield said: "The reading is so high it is off the scale in our sentencing guidelines.

"Custody is an option.

"We will be taking into account the very high reading and the aggravated factor of the incident."

The case was adjourned until April 7 at Cheltenham Magistrates' Court for a pre-sentence report to be prepared.

An interim driving disqualification was ordered.
