CHILDREN who attend rhyme and bounce at Stonehouse library this week were joined by a bear-y special guest.

Bookstart Bear made a special appearance at the library in Elm Road on Wednesday morning to help teach the youngsters some well-known nursery rhymes and help develop their love of reading.

Humpty Dumpty, this little piggy and the grand old Duke of York were just some of the rhymes Bookstart Bear sang with the children.

Bookstart is a national scheme which offers free books to all children before they start school.

Sue Laurence, head of library services for Gloucestershire, said: “These events are great fun for children, parents and carers and more than 20 children came along to Stonehouse library and met the fantastic Bookstart Bear last week.

“As part of the Bookstart scheme, families receive free packs which promote library membership, and rhyme and story sessions.

“Babies and children who love books and have the pleasure of hearing stories and rhymes have a flying start when it comes to learning to read by themselves.

“I would encourage all parents and carers to make the most of Bookstart by sharing books and attending fun family events where your child can collect stamps and certificates.”
