Following the resignation of Maria Miller as Culture, Media and Sport Secretary, a former student at Filton College - which merged with Stroud College to create South Gloucestershire and Stroud College in 2012 - has been promoted to take over the post.
Sajid Javid, MP for Bromsgrove, has served as Financial Secretary to the Treasury since last October. In his new role he has taken on responsibility in government for equalities.
Stroud MP Neil Carmichael welcomed the appointment. He tweeted: “Delighted with Sajid David as new Culture Secretary. As he is a former SGS student, I will be inviting him to Stroud very soon.”
Mr Javid, a father of four, became a vice-president at Chase Manhattan Bank at the age of 25. In 2012 the state-educated MP was made economic secretary to the Treasury, rising up the departmental ranks the following year.
Loughborough MP Nicky Morgan is stepping up from her role as Economic Secretary to the Treasury to replace Mr Javid.
