X FACTOR heartthrob Giles Potter is to attend the long-awaited opening of the new skate park in Stonehouse.

Giles, who was a finalist on last year's hit show at the age of just 16, will watch Lord Lieutenant Dame Janet Trotter officially open the facilities in Oldends Lane playing field at 12.30pm on Saturday.

Skaters and riders currently have to travel to Stroud, Nailsworth or Cam to find a skate area.

However, following a request from youngsters to build the park, town councillor Pam Swain has been overseeing the project which started in May.

After a presentation by skaters to Stonehouse Town Council back in March 2012, members agreed to throw their weight behind plans.

Grinding rails have been built on the site after a survey of 500 pupils at Maidenhill School showed that a skate park was at the top of their wish list.

Families are welcome to watch the opening which will include BMX, skate and scooter competitions plus displays which will start at 11am with music from MC Geordie.

There will also be a barbecue and ice-creams.

Student Giles, from Worcester sang the Jackie Wilson classic Reet Petite at the X Factor arena auditions and now models for Ratchet Clothing.
