CROWDS gathered to hear X Factor star Giles Potter sing at the opening of the new skate park and youth club in Stonehouse on Saturday.

Lord Lieutenant Dame Janet Trotter cut the ribbon surrounded by scooter riders and skaters in Oldends Lane playing field.

A finalist on last year’s show, Giles serenaded a young fan with the popular I’m Yours by Jason Mraz.

Giles, 16, from Worcester, said: “I’m really privileged to be opening the skate park and I will definitely be coming more often to have a ride on my scooter.

“I’m impressed with the park and I think everyone should give a massive thanks to the people who made it happen.”

Giles, a model for Ratchet Clothing, was presented with a gift from Millie Jotham, 16, a member of Stroud District Youth Council.

He then posed for pictures with excited fans.

Riders travelled from all over the country for the day.

Adam Keats, 22, came from Devon to try out the new park designed by Maverick.

“I heard about the opening today and travelled two hours from Exeter but it was definitely worth it,” he said.

The park, which is fully equipped with grinding rails, ledges, transition hips and a bowl, caters to both styles of riding – street and park – and for BMX and scooter riders as well as skaters.

Mayor Chris Brine said: “The children have been telling me this is what they wanted so now it is down to them to take care of it.”
