A GREAT Bisley tradition was continued on Thursday as schoolchildren decorated the village wells to celebrate Ascension Day.
Bisley vicar Rev Rosie Woodall led a procession through the streets alongside Avening Silver Band. Children from Bisley Blue Coat School followed carrying flower arrangements of stars and letters spelling out ‘AD2014 ASCENSION’.
The ceremony was started in 1863 by the Rev Thomas Keble to give thanks for the village’s pure water. Mr Keble introduced the well blessing after seeing a similar ceremony in Derbyshire. This year children from Bisley Blue Coat’ s twin school in Plessala, Brittany attended.
Ascension Day commemorates the ascension of Jesus to heaven 40 days after Easter Sunday.
