A YOUTH GROUP helped young people come into the news for the right reasons after helping to repair a much used local bench.

Minchinhampton Youth Club, who faced closure in 2012 when council funding was withdrawn, gave up a Sunday morning to rescue the wooden bench which had become unstable after a build up of moss and lichen from overhanging trees.

The group of 5 youths were assisted by leader Andrew Brooks and Local Parish Councillor John Williams who said he was “really proud” of the kids’ achievements.

“I noticed the seat was in a bad state, and something needed to be done because it stopped people from sitting outside. I mentioned it to the youth leader Andrew and it was really great the kids came along.” said Cllr Williams.

The club is now thriving after coming back from the brink of disaster when funds were pulled. It survives thanks to the hard work of the youth team, who continue to strive to find the funding to keep the club alive.

Cllr Williams said the generous actions of the youths were well received in the community and one lady brought the group tea and biscuits. He added that he hoped actions such of this could help see a change of attitude towards young people.

“Young people don’t get enough positive publicity for what they do; often what you hear is so negative. It would be nice to change that.”
