THE restoration of Capel’s Mill canal has been nominated for an engineering award celebrating projects costing more than one million.

Nominations have been announced by the institution of civil engineers south west for its civil engineering project of the year awards 2014.

ICE south west’s annual awards ceremony and dinner will be held at the Bristol museum and art gallery on Friday, July 4 where the winners of this year’s accolades will be announced.

Trish Johnson, ICE south west regional director said: “The objective of the awards is to recognise construction projects completed in 2013 of particular distinction, physical achievement, innovation, ingenuity or community involvement, which promote the excellence of the engineering profession.”

The three categories for the award are celebrating projects costing more than one million, recognising projects costing less than one million and a community award which highlights the significant achievement of involving the local residents and media.

There are several entries from Gloucestershire this year including Capel’s Mill canal restoration, Lechlade Wharf Bank protection works, Walham 400KV substation flood defence.

Building a new length of canal at Capel’s Mill was one of the biggest engineering challenges on the whole 37 mile Cotswold canals restoration between Saul and Lechlade.

The Capel’s Mill Restoration Project has completed the missing link on the Cotswolds Canal paving the way for reopening the link between the River Severn and River Thames.

Lechlade Wharf nominated for the minor award, is a 24-hour mooring for powered boats on the River Thames.

A 13 metre section of the river frontage at Lechlade Wharf was identified for urgent works to maintain the integrity of the frontage and minimise risk to the general public and navigation.

Walham 400KV substation flood defence nominated for the major award saw Trant install 1 kilometre of reinforced walls for robust flooding protection for nationally important Walham Substation, near Gloucester.

The substation links power stations supplying electricity to approximately one million homes and businesses.

Ms Trish added: “The judges will have an extremely difficult task this year of choosing from such wonderful projects.

“I am delighted to see so many fantastic engineering projects taking place in the local area.”
