A YEAR after celebrating his diamond wedding anniversary with wife Mary, bowls enthusiast Lesley Kirby has died aged 87.
Les, as he was known to his friends and family, died on Monday, June 4 six months after being diagnosed with lung cancer.
The eldest of four boys, Les was born in Chalford Hill on April 9, 1927.
As a young man with a flair for football, Les played for teams in Chalford, Brimscombe and Stonehouse – and he had a trial for Bristol City.
Les married wife Mary at Holy Trinity church in Minchinhampton on July 25, 1953 and last year the pair celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with a tea party with family and friends.
The funeral takes place at 1.30pm on Thursday, June 12 at Gloucester crematorium and is open to anyone who wishes to attend.
It will be followed by a reception at MidGlos Indoor Bowling Club in Browckworth.
Les is survived by wife Mary, son John and brother Graham.
