WITH the World Cup and Wimbledon over, Stroud District Council is encouraging local people to come out and play rounders.

It has launched an eight-week schedule of Monday night games as part of its health and wellbeing programme to get people active.

Sarah Urquhart, who is running the scheme for Stroud District Council, said:

“Rounders is a fantastic sport to play whatever your age and its inclusivity means it can be enjoyed by everyone from the complete beginner to the seasoned pro. These free sessions are open to families and businesses. Anyone can come along and play.

"Like most sports it also offers many health benefits, plus it is a great way to de-stress and unwind after a day at work, so we’re keen to get people involved in rounders this summer.”

The free sessions take place on Mondays at 6pm in Stratford Park, Stroud close to the Astroturf pitch until 1 September 2014 (apart from the 25 August bank holiday Monday). They are aimed at people aged 14 or over and last for an hour, or until rain stops play.

Hannah Drew, Sports Development Officer, for Stroud District Council said:

“Rounders is a great sport for people of all ages and abilities, with the emphasis on the fun and social aspects of the game. It’s a great chance to make new friends, keep fit and generally have a great evening outside in the park. No booking is required – just turn up and play.”

Nicola Lawrence who turned up with nine others at the launch event, said:

“I would encourage anyone to come along to the rounders games. It was great fun and is a really good way of getting to know others.”
