A 20mph speed limit is being proposed for several streets in central Stroud to come into action before the end of the year.
Stroud District Council is in favour of the campaign which is spearheaded by Cllr Sarah Lunnon to dramatically reduce speed limits in the town.
Cllr Lunnon said: “I am delighted with plans for the new limit. I believe it will make a more pleasant environment in Stroud for people to walk and cycle around.
“It will be much safer in general and I am very pleased to have a huge amount of support” added Cllr Lunnon.
Consultations are now being carried out by Gloucestershire County Council’s Highways department regarding the plans to introduce the new speed restriction.
Support for the scheme was put into place after the council unanimously voted to write to the Gloucestershire County Council in agreement with the alteration.
The change is hoped to increase the safety of nearly 80 roads within Stroud, including Merrywalks, Bisley Road, Folly Lane, Beeches Green and Slad Road.
The councillor has worked alongside the town council, the county council’s highway team and Gloucestershire Police in order to combat speed concerns within the area.
The aim is to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists on Stroud’s roads, with a 10mph reduction from the current 30mph urban speed limit. The consultation period in place will last up until January 29 and up until this date, people will have the opportunity to comment on the proposal. Visit www.stroud.gov.uk for more information.
