STROUD Distrct Council leader Geoff Wheeler keeps you up to date with what is happening at the council

Friday, July 11 – Jobs and Growth
The start of a series of internal meetings to see how the council can improve how it works with businesses and to see what more we can do to promote jobs and economic growth in the district.
The main areas we are looking at are infrastructure, skills and apprenticeships, town centres and the council’s procurement activities.

Thursday, July 17 – Pride in Your Neighbourhood, Cam
A neighbourhood event in the Hadley Road area of Cam led by the council and Gloucestershire Police along with other partners which form the Stroud Community Safety Partnership.
Crime prevention, health advice was made available and free safety checks and smoke alarm fitting were offered by Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue.
The area received a general spring clean and the council’s dog warden came along to offer advice.
The aim is to reduce the fear of crime, build community cohesion and generally make neighbourhoods happier places to live.
Two more of these events are planned (see below).

Monday, July 21 – Stroud District Youth Council
I was invited to give youth council members a brief overview of the political make up of SDC and my role as leader.
I also had the pleasure of handing out badges and service certificates to acknowledge youth council members’ contributions to their communities.

Thursday, July 24 – Pride in Your Neighbourhood, Minchinhampton
The aforementioned Pride in Your Neighbourhood event comes to the Eastfield Road area of Minchinhampton between 2pm-5pm.
Even if you don’t live in the area, you may wish to pop along for some advice.
I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned this before, but the The council’s neighbourhood wardens are certified to offer free home security checks. If you’d like one for your home call 01453 754276 or email community.safety@stroud.gov.uk

Thursday, July 24 – Planning Meeting, Ebley Mill, 6pm

This planning meeting, which was scheduled to decide on applications for three large supermarkets, has now been postponed. After the original meeting papers were published, which included the recommendations from officers, we received further submissions from the planning agents. These obviously have to be considered properly and it was felt that there was insufficient time for the revised reports, for what are three major applications, to be comprehensively assessed in time for the meeting. The meeting is likely to be rescheduled for mid-September.

Thursday, July 31 – Pride in Your Neighbourhood, Frampton-on-Severn
The final event of the summer takes place on Lake Lane in Frampton, once again between 2pm-5pm with a host of community activities.
The event will also see the exciting Rush Skatepark and Inside Football providing free taster sessions.
