A WOMAN was the victim of a serious sexual assault on the weekend near Lydney Boating Lake.

Police are appealing for information after the woman was attacked at about 11pm on Saturday, July 26.

The victim had walked past Lydney Church when she became aware of someone behind her.

She then walked across the Church car park, along Church Road, over the train track, under the footbridge and then down to the lakeside path, where she is believed to have been attacked. The offender is believed to have been wearing dark clothing but no other description is available.

Detective Constable Rob Harrison said: “The victim is being given every possible support at present and we are carrying out a number of forensic and CCTV enquiries to identify this man.

"A fishing competition was taking place on the lake at the time, so it may be that an angler saw or heard something.

“We don’t wish to alarm people but we would urge everyone to consider their personal safety when on a night out.”

“Our advice, as ever, is always to choose well-lit routes and avoid alleyways or shortcuts.

“Just try to be aware of your surroundings and do not engage in conversations with strangers. If you are concerned for your safety then contact the police.”

Anyone who witnessed a man in the area or has any information that could assist police is urged to call 101, quoting incident 589 of July 26.
