MOST teenagers are obsessed with social media - but Stroud High School charity fundraiser Amy Carr, 13, is bucking the trend.

To take a stand against the rise of the selfie, Amy decided to have her head shaved to raise funds for Cancer Research UK and St Rose’s School in Stroud.

And so far she has raised a staggering £2,700.

Amy, from Stonehouse, believes social media is making young people ‘obsessed’ with their appearance.

To show that image is not important, she said goodbye to her locks at Stroud farmers’ market in front of a crowd of friends, family and shoppers with the aim of raising £900 to be shared between the two good causes. She has now far exceeded the target.

Amy said: “My aunty Anona died of cancer when I was younger and it struck me then that everyone should help so I decided to do something for the charity.”

Before the clippers were brandished, Amy’s hair stretched right down her back.

“It felt strange at first but I am getting used to it now. It still feels weird when people stare and I’ve forgotten why they are staring,” she said.

“I was nervous about being bald but it’s just hair, people have to live with cancer every day.

“Thank you to everyone who has donated and helped promote what I’ve done.

“I hope the money raised helps those who need it.”

Commenting on the way social media makes people focus on their appearance, Amy said: “As girls today we should be strong, we should be allowed to be who we are, not what people and society think we should be.”

Amy’s dad Pete said: “We are really proud of Amy. It has been a fantastic learning experience for her as well as a very brave thing to do at her age or any age.

“We have been overwhelmed by people’s positive reactions and Amy’s enjoying being able to wash her hair in a fraction of the time it used to take.”

St Rose’s in Beeches Green provides education, therapy and day and residential care for children and young people with physical disabilities.

Most pupils have associated learning and communication difficulties and some have complex health needs.
