MOTORISTS are being asked to consider taking an alternative route when essential work is carried out on the C&G Roundabout in August.

Traffic light cabling is being installed as part of the £3.1 million C&G and Walls Roundabouts Improvement Scheme from Monday 11th August, for up to two weeks.

In order for this to be carried out safely, off-peak lane closures will be in place from Monday to Friday, between 9am and 3pm. At times throughout this two week period, it will be necessary to reduce the approaches to C&G Roundabout down to one lane.

The work could create some delays so anyone using the roundabout is being advised to take an alternative route if possible, or to plan their journey to avoid travelling when the off-peak closures are in place.

There will be no lane closures during peak times from 6am to 9am and from 3pm to 7pm, Monday to Friday.

During the week commencing Monday 4th August workers will continue to excavate verges to allow for lane widening and the current off-peak lane closures will remain in place.

The C&G and Walls Roundabouts Improvement Scheme costs £3.1million in total, which is being met with £2.2 million government funding and contributions from Gloucestershire County Council and Sainsbury's.

In May last year the Department for Transport approved the county council's funding bid to help tackle the serious congestion issue at the A38 and A417 at the C&G and Walls roundabouts in the Barnwood area of Gloucester.

The scheme includes changes to the junctions, widening of lanes, more flexible traffic light systems and extra lanes.

Cllr Vernon Smith, cabinet member for highways said: “I would like to ask people to bear with us while this work is carried out. Improving our roads is vital for the economic prosperity of the county and we want to ensure they will be in good shape for many years to come.

“We are doing our best to minimise disruption and it may be advisable for anyone who is able to take an alternative route, to use it during this period.”
