Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust’s Ellen Winter reflects on a month of activity in and around the Stroud Valleys.

A FEW weeks ago we had a brilliant response to our call for wildlife surveyors and held our first meeting of the Stroud Wildlife Survey Group at the Britannia Inn in Nailsworth.

The room was packed with friendly volunteers who are keen to help us find out more about where wildlife lives. Discussion over drinks resulted in dates for sessions to learn about surveying wildflowers on verges around Oakridge.

For more information email Sally on stroudwildlifesurvey@gmail.com This summer young wildlife enthusiasts will enjoy the opportunity of a lifetime on Friday, August 8, at the magical Wick Court in Arlingham, The inspiring event will be run by myself and artist Cath Hodsman. It will give youngsters a unique opportunity to be enthralled by the micro-world of invertebrates.

After a bug hunt in the beautiful ancient orchard each youngster will get to use one of Cath’s microscopes to look at insect specimens and produce amazing drawings from the details they see.

Younger attendees will be introduced to the wonderful world of crafting amazing creepy crawlies from recycled materials. All materials are provided.

Children must be accompanied by an adult. Cost: £20 for children 11 – 16, £8 Children five – 10.

Book your place by visiting gloucestershirewildlifetrust.co.uk/events.

If you want to improve your drawing why not treat yourself to a wildlife illustration course with professional wildlife artist Steve Roberts at Hawkwood College, Wednesday, August 27.
