A MAN has been charged with two assaults on Cheltenham High Street at the end of July.
Hamid Reza Baygi, 56 and of Montpellier Terrace, Cheltenham, was remanded in custody and appeared at Stroud Magistrates' Court on Wednesday (August 6) to face charges of assault by beating, a racially aggravated public order offence and assaulting a police officer. He will next appear before magistrates in Stroud on September 3.
The charges relate to an incident close to a bench near Tesco Express on the Lower High Street on the afternoon of Thursday July 31, when police responded to a report of a drunk man being aggressive. On arrival, officers were verbally abused with racist language and one officer was kicked in the shin.
Police believe onlookers filmed the incident on mobile phones and are urging anyone who has footage to call 101, quoting incident 338 of July 31.
