STEVE Robinson has become the first Stroud district councillor to take on the ice bucket challenge.

Today, Wednesday, he joined the ranks of Britney Spears, George W Bush and David Beckham to drench themselves in freezing water for a good cause.

Similar to the hoards of famous faces who have already accepted the challenge Cllr Robinson (Lab, Nailsworth) was urged to share a video of the event and nominate someone else to do the same, making a donation to any charity supporting Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis – more commonly known as motor neurone disease in the UK.

Cllr Robinson’s daughter Kate Turner nominated him to do the challenge and when Patrick Coyle, owner of Nailsworth Computer Shop heard about it he offered a £100 donation to ALS if Cllr Robinson did the challenge outside his store in George Street.

“In some of the challenges I have seen people get absolutely soaked but I really didn’t get that wet,” said Cllr Robinson.

“I think that’s probably because Pat filled the whole bucket with ice so it was very, very cold.”

So far Cllr Robinson has raised a total of £120 for charities supporting motor neurone disease.

After his soaking Cllr Robinson nominated his son-in-law Steve Broadbent, his son-in-law’s father Pete Broadbent and good friend Roger Cathrall to next take on the challenge.

Last week SNJ sports editor Ashley Loveridge also took on the ice bucket challenge at the New Lawn.
