FLOWERS bloomed in Painswick over the Bank Holiday weekend to celebrate the centenary of the birth of Laurie Lee.

St Mary’s Church, Painswick, hosted a Tribute in Flowers from Friday to Monday.

Twelve members of the church flower guild collaborated to create the displays, some of which were accompanied by paintings created by four local artists – Andy Lovell, Rupert Aker, Jane Garbett and Jackie Herbert.

Seven displays were on show each expressing a different book or aspect of Laurie’s life. The main display in the porch was based on Cider With Rosie and featured a small haywain.

Laurie was a frequent visitor to Painswick and many residents have memories of him.

The floral festival came about after Painswick Arts Festival organiser Jackie Herbert approached flower guild leader Freda Steed about putting on a display.

Members of the flower guild create displays every week in the church and for weddings, funerals and special times of the year.
