VOLUNTEERS in the Stroud district are desperately being sought by Guide Dogs for the Blind because a key member of the team is moving away from the area.

The charity, which supplies guide dogs to blind and partially sighted people, is looking for a number of kind-hearted and enthusiastic residents who can lend a helping hand with a variety of tasks.

Workers at the charity say helpers are needed, not only to help with caring for and walking dogs, but also to assist with raising money and awareness of the organisation’s work.

Sue Bushell, a community engagement officer for Guide Dogs for the Blind in Stroud, said: “The team here have a dedicated small group of volunteers but we need more members and someone to take the lead because a key member of the group, a local puppy walker, is moving away.

“We are sure there are people who live and work in and around Stroud who, like us, can see the opportunities there are to raise awareness about our work and raise the funds that are vital to make a difference to people’s lives.”

She added: “What fascinates me about Guide Dogs is that connection between a person and animal, and the huge difference that animal can make to a person’s life.

“As a volunteer you will have the opportunity to develop an understanding of the difficulties faced by people who are blind or partially sighted.”

Anyone interested in volunteering for the charity or who simply wants to find out more is invited to attend an information day at St Matthew’s Church Hall in Church Street, Cainscross, on Tuesday, October 7, from 7pm until 9pm.

Refreshments will be provided and residents will have the opportunity to learn more about the local team, the services on offer, and what volunteering opportunities are available.
